Was Special Adviser on Strategic Planning to the British government(1991-1994)

Appointed Professor of Geography and Head of Department at the University of Reading(1968)

Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley(1980s)

Fellowships:

A Fellow of the British Academyand a member of the Academia Europea

A Fellow of the British Academy and the European Academy

A founder member of the Regional Studies Association and first editor of its journal Regional Studies

Prizes

Holds fourteen honorary doctorates from universities in the UK, Sweden and Canada

An honorary member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, which awarded him its Gold Medal in 2003

Received the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society for distinction in research

Holds fourteen honorary doctorates from universities in the UK, Sweden and Canada

Received the 2005 Balzan Prize for work on the Social and Cultural History of Cities since the Beginning of the 16th Century
