This report is composed of seven subsets, that is, the general report of Chinese cities’ competitiveness, the basic framework, the research findings, the basic strategies, the theme strategies, international vision, and comments on the ranking. Based on the integration of the latest authoritative research products on urban competitiveness both from in and abroad, this report made an analysis of the competitiveness of cities in China from the perspectives of current situation, trends, challenges, experiences and strategies. And in addition, it made its concern on the issue of cities’ image-marketing. By utilizing the latest data, comprehensive indicators and advanced econometric methods, it give Chinese cities a general ranking according to their comprehensive competitiveness, to which the society pays a lot of attention. Meanwhile, it made some evaluation on several different aspects of the top 50 most competitive cities in China.

According to the theoretical framework, the measurement of a city’s comprehensive competitiveness is based on four objective indicators listed as follows: comprehensive market share, economic growth, GDP per hectare, and income per capita. Based on researches on the overall competitiveness and more than 260 primary indicators, it put forth 162 factor-indicators, 54 index-indicators, and 12 sub-item-index indicators to measure the cities’ sub items competitiveness. According to the theoretical framework, it first adopted relevant data of the year 2001 from the National Bureau of Statistics and statistics departments in Hong Kong and Macao to evaluate 200 cities of their comprehensive competitiveness. The data of objective indicators are taken directly from “Urban Statistical Yearbook of China", “China Statistical Yearbook", and "China Statistical Yearbook of Urban Construction" from 2000 to2002, as well as other professional yearbooks, statistical yearbooks or yearbooks on cities issued by relevant ministries and commissions of our country. Thus, all the data are standard statistical data. Questionnaires are carried out to get the original data for subjective indicators and those that are both subjective and objective.
